How do I use a Maternity TENS

Can I use an ordinary TENS machine for labour.

The answer is NO as the TENS that we recommend for labour are specially designed for childbirth. The pads used on ordinary TENS are smaller. Maternity TENS for labour have a larger pad and include a booster button which is very important.

Lady TENS is a pre-set hand held unit, which is the simplest of the three units. The booster button is part of the unit itself.

A few common Maternity TENS questions answered:

The Elle TENS is the latest in digital technology which incorporates the features of both the Lady TENS and the Femme TENS. It has an integrated booster button and the ability to switch between two different burst and boost ranges at the touch of a button to ensure maximum pain relief.

Can I try the unit before going into labour?
Yes. Just try two pads on your forearm to feel the different pulse sensations. Remember to follow the instructions on the back of the electrode packet to keep them fresh for the big day. It is recommended that you order an extra pack at £3.50 for practising.

Can Maternity TENS be used with other forms of pain relief?
Yes, in conjunction with gas and air or pethidine.

Can I use a Maternity TENS if considering a water birth?
Yes, but not in the water itself. Remember that TENS is effective right from the start of your labour. You will need it well before you enter the water. Normally, a midwife will ask you to enter into the water when you are between 4-5cm dilated.

Can I use a Maternity TENS in Hospital?
Yes, but you may have to switch it off temporarily if the midwife requires you to do so.

Are Maternity TENS machines safe?
Yes. They are designed for labour. However, do not use before the 37th week of pregnancy unless under medical supervision. If you suffer from epilepsy or have any doubts whatsoever consult a medical professional. If you use a demand type pace maker you should not use a TENS machine. There are no known side effects for you or your baby.

Can I use the Maternity TENS after my birth?
Yes. Maternity TENS machines have been cleverly designed for use after labour too. You can use your machine for:

• shoulder pain from breast feeding
• menstrual pain
• back pain
• after pains
• post-operative pain following a caesarian section

When do you send me the Maternity TENS unit?
We usually send the unit 3 weeks before your due date.

How long will it take to arrive?
All Maternity TENS units are sent by first class post. However, please allow 3-5 working days for delivery.

What happens if my due date is less than three weeks away?
Do not worry. We offer you a next working day delivery service* for an extra £4.50, as long as your order is placed before 3pm between Monday and Friday.

Terms and Conditions:

1. Maternity TENS should only be used in accordance with the instructions provided and only by the Customer named on the form provided.

2. The success of Maternity TENS in labour is neither guaranteed nor warranted by the seller

3. Maternity TENS must not be used by anyone fitted with a cardiac pacemaker, who has a heart disease or suffers from epilepsy. If you have any concern whatsoever consult your doctor or midwife prior to use.

4. Maternity TENS must not be used until the pregnancy has reached full term (37 weeks onwards).

5. If the baby is late, the customer must phone Maternity TENS on 01704 500 505 to request an extra 7 days hire. This will be given free of charge.

6. Failure to return the Maternity TENS at the expiry of this 37-day period will result in the Customer being charged £5 for each and every week or any part of a week over and above the hire period until the Maternity TENS is returned. If the unit is not returned for any reason the Customer will be charged for that unit (see 8). All outstanding sums will automatically be charged to the Customer’s credit or debit card.

7. The hire unit must be sent back to Maternity TENS at SAD-SHOP, 16 Stanley Street, Southport, Merseyside PR9 0BY via a Post Office so as to reach this address by the end of the 37-day period by special delivery, or by obtaining a certificate of postage. The Customer must retain either of these certificates of postage for 3 months. In the event that the Maternity TENS is not received at Maternity TENS premises, the certificate of postage must be produced. Failure to do so renders the Customer liable for the full retail value of the TENS unit.

8. In the event of damage to, or loss of the TENS by the Customer, the full retail value less the hire charge is payable to the seller by the Customer.

9. Non-use of the hired Maternity TENS is entirely at the discretion of the customer and no refund will apply.

10. All of our TENS are fully tested immediately prior to dispatch. However, the liability of the seller shall not exceed the hire charge.

11. The Customer should check the contents of the hire pack upon receipt and familiarise herself with the TENS unit and the instructions. The Customer must advise the seller of any problems whatsoever immediately. The seller accepts no responsibility where the Customer fails to do so and renders it impossible to take any corrective action.

12. In making a payment for a Maternity TENS unit the purchaser agrees to agree to the above conditions.
